About the Community

Green is ideally located along the I-77 corridor between Akron and Canton in Summit County. The construction of I-77 in the early 1960's, with three exits in Green, have played a major role in the development of Green, as a slow transition from a rural farming community began. In the mid-1950's, a growing demand for more housing lead to the development of tracts of farmland into residential subdivisions. The largest growth in population came between 1960 and 1990 when our population nearly doubled.

Major shopping malls are located to the north and south of Green in Cleveland, Akron and Canton, although many small shopping areas primarily located along S. Main Street, Massillon Road, and Arlington Road provide convenient everyday shopping.

Green Local Schools are one of the most highly-rated in the area; and our five schools house approximately 4,000 students. A block-scheduling program instituted in Green High School in the late 1990's has proven beneficial to students, by providing more class time with each teacher. Our new high school, constructed in 1996, houses 1,000 students.

Excellent organized sports programs of all kinds receive strong community support. High school programs include: football, basketball, wrestling, track, soccer, golf, baseball, softball. Several youth organizations are supported by parents and players: Green Youth Football, Green Baseball Federation, Green Soccer, and Green Youth Basketball.

Commercial development in recent years has helped Green maintain one of the lowest real estate tax rates in the area, and one of the lowest income taxed communities: 1%

Interstate 77 is not the only means of transportation through Green. The Akron Canton Airport is located in the southeastern portion of the city on approximately 1,500 acres, and another major improvement project is currently underway at the airport. The Metro Regional Transit Authority has expanded bus transportation into Green in recent years, providing service to commuters traveling north into Akron. Several trucking and shipping companies are located in Green, serving the commercial and industrial community.

History of Green

Green (then Green Township) was established in 1809 as part of Stark County. The reason for the name "Green" was not documented, although it is believed that early settlers named Green for it's appearance.

The primary industries were that of the period - farming, milling & coal mining. Five settlements were established: Comet, East Liberty, Greensburg, Aultman, and Myersville. There was quite a rivalry of sorts between residents of East Liberty and Greensburg, and at one time East Liberty had it's own post office.

Green became part of Summit County when it was established in 1840. 1,500 residents voted in the election at that time.

Three trustees governed the township at that time, administering the finances and each overseeing the roads in a designated area of the township. At times, roads were named for where they took you (Greensburg Road, Massillon Road, Comet Road) or for the farm it to you to (Wise Road, Thursby Road, Boettler Road). Men were required to work on the roads for two days or had to pay a $3.00 poll tax.
